Destructive Chewing - Pet Care Information
When
you own a puppy, it’s inevitable that something
in your home will be destroyed, or close to it,
by your friendly canine’s explorative chewing.
While this is the natural why for a pup to learn
about his surroundings, there are still ways in
which you as the owner can take action in preventing
this behavior from becoming a habit. By helping
him learn the house rules and providing him other
chewing alternatives, you can lessen this transition
to his new home.
First you need to help your dog learn what is
okay to chew, and what is not okay. Make this
easier on him by keeping your belongings out of
reach. Put trash cans up higher (on shelves or
counters), keep clothes, books, and remote controls
up out of reach. There are some items, of course,
that can’t be kept out of harms way. For
example, you come into the living room and find
your puppy knawing away at the carpet. In these
cases, if you catch him in the act, make a loud
noise to let him know you dislike his behavior,
and offer him a chew toy. Then pet him and display
your approval of the chew toy.
Dogs do get bored just like humans, so offering
a new chew toy every now and then is a good way
to prevent them finding new items in your house
to destroy. Also, when you have to leave the dog
for a while, it’s best to keep him in a
safe area out of reach of anything but his toys.
Crate training is helpful here; destructive chewing
is very commonly prevented by putting a dog in
his crate while the owners are out.
If your dog is still chewing destructively after
seven to nine months, you may need to seek the
help of a professional. In any case, be patient
with your canine as it discovers the appropriate
ways to use its teeth.
