Dog Grooming Tips - Pet Care Information
So
you got your first dog. She’s soft and playful.
You love her. After a few days she starts looking
a little unkempt. Her fur is out of place and
shedding, her breath is getting a little stale
and you notice the toe nails are beginning to
dig into you when she jumps up to greet you. Grooming
your dog accomplishes much more than just making
your pet's coat look nice and shiny.
Grooming also provides you with the opportunity
to spend some "quality time" with your
dog, combing, brushing, bathing and generally
bonding with her. While grooming you should also
check your dog closely for any problems. Move
the hair aside and examine the skin closely for
signs of flea, ticks or skin irritations. Look
for any unusual problems with the coat such as
mats, tangles, dandruff, etc. Learn where she
likes to be combed and brushed and where she doesn't.
All dogs have sensitive areas that need to be
groomed a little more gently and carefully than
others. By paying special attention to these areas,
you will help make your dog more comfortable while
being groomed, and she will not resist future
grooming sessions. You will also become familiar
with areas that she enjoys having groomed. This
is helpful if you need to calm her during stressful
times such as veterinary visits.
Before you start grooming let your dog sniff
the brush and comb, and then talk to your pet
in a reassuring tone while grooming. If the grooming
procedure is made comfortable for your dog, she
will begin to look forward to regular grooming
sessions. If you groom your dog from puppy-hood
she will be used to the routine and it will be
easier but if you get an adult dog, for example,
you can make the experience a pleasant one by
keeping a calm demeanor and tone of voice. Your
dog will look forward to being pet and pampered
by you during these weekly sessions. If you can
shedding dogs should be brushed daily, this will
keep your home much cleaner and your dog looking
that much better!
